Doug Rugh

Doug Rugh (rü) was born in Berlin (1964) and spent his childhood in the Middle East where his father was an American diplomat. As a teenager he apprenticed to artisans in Cairo , Egypt and studied painting and sculpture at the Putney School in Vermont . Doug attended the Maryland Institute College of Art before studying at the Schuler School of Fine Arts in Baltimore , an atelier which specializes in the materials and methods of the old masters. He worked as a scientific illustrator at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, Massachusetts where both of his grandfathers did scientific research before completing his BFA at the Rhode Island School of Design with highest honors.
Since then Rugh has created original works of art for such clients as Barnes and Noble, Microsoft, Prudential, The New York Times, Reader's Digest, Newsweek and The Washington Post. Commissioned work appeared regularly in print, on book and magazine covers as well as in numerous publications. He now devotes his time to creating fine art for galleries and accepting portrait commissions. Rugh is one award shy of the designation "Copley Master" and his paintings range in price from $600 for a plein air sketch to $15,000 for a large studio work.
Doug had a show with his wife, Hillary Osborn, at the South Street Gallery which opened on February 17, 2006. View images 'here'.
